A Colorful Journey: Foraged Dye Workshop with Hannah of Hanoux

Last month, Wally Farms had the pleasure of hosting a foraged dye workshop led by the talented Hannah of Hanoux. It was a delightful event that brought together creativity, nature, and community spirit. Participants gathered on the farm, eager to learn the art of dyeing fabrics using natural materials found in our very own surroundings.

The Foraged Dye Experience

Hannah guided attendees through the fascinating process of foraging for dye plants. Participants explored the lush grounds of Wally Farms, discovering an array of plants that could be transformed into vibrant dyes. From goldenrod to walnut hulls, the bounty of nature provided a stunning palette of colors.

Using a steam pot method, Hannah demonstrated how to extract and apply these natural dyes. Participants watched in awe as the colors developed and transformed through this traditional technique. The steam pot allowed for deep, rich hues, enhancing the natural beauty of the plants and creating a truly immersive dyeing experience.

The results were nothing short of magical. Each participant left with a unique piece of dyed fabric, a tangible memory of their day immersed in the beauty of nature and creativity.

Welcoming Back Hannah for an Indigo Dye Workshop

Building on the success and enthusiasm of the foraged dye workshop, we are thrilled to announce that Hannah will be returning to Wally Farms for another captivating event. This time, she will be leading a fresh indigo dye workshop on August 4th at 9 AM. In this hands-on workshop, you'll discover the magic of working with fresh indigo leaves to create beautiful, natural dyes.

Dive into Organic Indigo

This class is a deep dive into dyeing with Organic Indigo. A deep blue pigment derived from a green shrub plant, we will be using ‘Indigofera’ or Mexican Indigo to create our bath from dried pigment sourced from Oaxaca, MX, and Japanese Indigo for the fresh leaf experiments grown in Hannah's garden. Everyone will learn the basics of shibori (tie dye) methods to create patterns on cloth using string. We will learn how to make the indigo bath together and create swatches of silk and cotton dyed different shades of blue.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn the art of indigo dyeing, from preparing the indigo vat to creating stunning patterns on fabrics. Whether you're a seasoned dyer or a complete beginner, this workshop promises to be an enriching and inspiring experience.

Join us for a day of creativity, learning, and fun as we welcome Hannah back to Wally Farms. Spaces are limited, so be sure to secure your spot soon. We look forward to seeing you there and sharing in the joy of indigo dyeing!
