Reflecting on Our Workshops: A Look Back and a Look Forward

As the Agritourism Director at Wally Farms, I don’t often have time to reflect on some of the work I do but today I’m going to reminisce about two truly special workshops we hosted this summer. Both events brought together passionate participants, guided by skilled artisans, and showcased the essence of Hudson Valley through craft, connection, and creativity. We’re already looking forward to 2025, inspired by the vibrant community and beautiful creations that emerged this season.

A Summer of Creativity and Connection

Our weaving workshops took place under the summer sun, where participants gathered with anticipation and excitement to learn the art of basket weaving. Amy Krone of Cambium Lost Arts led our first workshop, teaching attendees how to craft functional market totes from reed. With her expertise and patience, Amy made weaving accessible to beginners and advanced crafters alike, creating a welcoming environment for all.

Later in the season, Hannah from Hanoux guided our second workshop, where participants tried their hand at indigo dye techniques with fresh Indigo from Hannah’s garden. These sessions emphasized a deep connection to nature and encouraged participants to use locally sourced materials, tying into our commitment to sustainability.

A Taste of the Hudson Valley

Both workshops featured a light lunch that showcased the region’s finest ingredients, elevating the experience with farm-fresh flavors. Our menu included:

  • Salad with Locally Harvested Greens and Stone Fruit: A seasonal medley of greens, sweet stone fruits, and snap peas from Hearty Roots Farm, dressed with fresh herbs from our own garden.

  • Baguettes from Bread Alone: Crunchy, flavorful baguettes that paired perfectly with Ronnybrook’s salty, rich butter.

  • Stew of New York State Beans and Greens: A warm and comforting dish, made with local beans and greens, that nourished participants as they crafted.

These meals became more than just food—they were a celebration of our local harvest and the partnerships that support Wally Farms’ mission to promote sustainable practices.

A Vision for 2025 and Beyond

Our weaving workshops this summer were a testament to the power of hands-on learning and community. Seeing participants leave with their handwoven totes and naturally dyed baskets, each a personal achievement, was deeply rewarding. As we look to 2025, we’re excited to offer more workshops that connect people with the land, local art, and sustainable practices.

Thank you to Amy and Hannah for their contributions, and to everyone who joined us. Whether you're interested in learning new crafts, tasting farm-fresh foods, or simply enjoying the beauty of our farm, there's something here for everyone. Stay tuned for more events and be sure to visit our website and follow us on social media for the latest updates. We look forward to welcoming you back to Wally Farms for another season of creativity and connection.
